Script Notes: As the star of TV's The Real McCoys, Walter Brennan was everybody's favorite Grandpa. An accomplished character actor and three-time Oscar winner, Brennan made his way up through the Hollywood ranks the hard way; right through the middle of Central Casting. For years, he subsisted on extra roles only, until discovered in late 1949. In this first of two Ford Show appearances, Walter tries to erase an old debt to Ernie by giving him his prized possession: Solly, the Wonder Horse (right). Hey...!Ford Show Trivia! The head peeking out over Ernie's shoulder on the right is none other than then-stage manager Selwyn Touber--who would go on to become The Ford Show's director for 3 of its five seasons. Oh, by the way, Ernie's the one with the moustache.

Ernie's Guest: Dr. Frank Baxter

Script Notes: O.k....let's see a show of hands--remember "Mr. Hemoglobin"? If you were an elementary school kid or teacher in the '50's, you do...because you went to school with Dr. Frank Baxter. Acting as everyone's favorite guide through the murky waters of math and science, Baxter was the 'host' of scores of public school, government-produced educational films, opening the door for "Mr. Wizard", and paving the way for interactive education in America. But all that goes right out the old window when he shows up armed with a set of bongos, determined to make it in show-biz...with Ernie's help, of course!
